HARRY PARLETT (1881-1971)

Stripography

An early postcard (circa 1920) by Harry Parlett signing himself as "Comicus"

Harry Parlett was the father of the two Golden era master comic artists George and Reg Parlett. Harry himself was the son of Tom Parlett who drew many comical postcards around the turn of the century: and postcards were in fact Harry's own entry into artwork prior to joining AP in 1910 to draw Inspector Spot for Butterfly.

Over the years Harry worked on many AP titles including Firefly (1915), Funny Wonder (1918), Chuckles (1919) and Film Fun (1920). For Kinema Comic he drew Jackie Cooper and Chester Conklin (both 1920) and for it's companion comic Film Fun, he drew Larry Semon, Slim Summerville (in 1920) and Buster Keaton (1929).

He also contributed work to the comics of Odhams (Mickey Mouse Weekly) and Paget (Glee Comic etc) during the thirties and forties. He retired in 1951.

Like many other artists of this vintage, Harry Parlett was both a creator of new sets, and he also took over the sets belonging to, or created by, other artists. This is one of the reasons that accurate stripographies of artists of this period are prone to inaccuracies. If you spot any mistakes or ommisions in the list below, please e-mail me.
