What's New
2005 Archive

Comics have always turned to Hollywood as a source of inspiration. Such titles as Dell's Movie Classics, Fleetway's Thriller Picture Library and WDL's Western Classics spring to mind. So it is refreshing to see the trend reverse. I have developed a new section of films based on original comic books: this does not include those characters based on novels and pulps (i.e. Conan, Tarzan, Cisco Kid etc.), neither does it include those based on cartoons or puppets (i.e. Flintstones, Popeye, Thunderbirds etc.) or television (i.e. Twilight Zone, Man from Uncle etc.), just original comic books.

Well annual Summer Holidays are over and we are sliding into Christmas! I have received an e-mail from Norwegian collector Torfinn Jåsund who has provided lots of information about the Norwegian version of the Eagle comic: many thanks Torfinn.

Over the next few weeks I intend to update the French SF pages and also add a couple more Fleetway artists to the list, and update the For Sale page. So don't forget to look back.

Not a lot of time at the moment for working on the website, however I have added a Francesco Solano Lopez UK Checklist and also a special page on the Father of Science Fiction - Hugo Gernsback.

Hope you enjoy.

I have recently been taken to task for not putting references on this site. As I tried to explain, virtually each line would require a footnote if I were to adopt this policy. However, on reflection this is not a bad idea. I have started (and then got fed up and stopped) to place various comic and associated references into a special Bibiography section of the site. This is listed by language and then by the country in

which the book was published. I hope that this proves useful.

Aside from that I have:

For sale - Dan Dare T-shirts

In 2003 Luxembourg celebrated its 10th Annual Comic Fair. To mark this event several special activities took place including a large comic exhibition featuring amongst others, Dan Dare.

At that time a limited number of Dan Dare T-shirts were available - German publisher Eckart Salleck who released the first German version of Dan Dare is seen here sporting his. There are still a few left: these are unworn, brand new and still in their original plastic bags. Sizes available LARGE (mostly) and MEDIUM (some), and in one colour BLACK.

Price per shirt 12 UK Pounds (18 euros), plus postage and packing.

Please e-mail me for more details.

Romano Felmang (left) and myself at RomaCartoon.

During the weekend 6-8th May I had the great pleasure of attending RomaCartoon, one of the largest of Italy's Comic Fairs held annually in Rome.

Whilst it provided a great opportunity to encounter old friends and make the acquaintance of new ones, I was saddened to learn of the death of Nevio Zaccara. Nevio was one of the great masters of science fiction comic strips, and worked on Willy West for Il Giorno dei Regazzi and also provided work for the US Star Trek strip. His passing marks the end of an era.

Time is in short supply these days so there are not many new updates to the site. However I thought that I might share a couple of emails I received from Italian artist Romano Felmang :

Hallò Steve,

Other Italian artists who worked for Fleetway.

Antonio Sciotti:BARRACUDA (during a visit at his home in 1968 I saw he was finishing the last Barracuda episode)

Roberto Diso : ZIP NOLAN (probably with Sante D'Amico inks)

Silio Romagnoli SPIDER ( 1 episode for Giolitti Agency)

Pietro e Paolo Montecchi, Leone Frollo and Lino Jeva : JOHNNY NERO

Mario Uggeri and Virgilio Muzzi KIT CARSON

Loredano Ugolini, Hugo Pratt, Gino D'Antonio, Renato Polese, Aldo Marcuzzi, Nevio Zeccara, Annibale Casabianca : WAR COMICS

The right name of the late Tosi is Alberto

My friend and great artist Massimo Belardinelli worked a lot for Fleetway with Giolitti. It is all for now

Thanks for the attention
Romano

Hallò Steve,

M.Uggeri drew the episode Kit Carson and the Cheyenne Guns in 1958 on Cow Boy Picture Library. Some episode of Kit Carson was drawn by Umberto Sammarini in the 70's. Guido Buzzelli drew episodes of Robin Hood. I drew a couple of one shot, one was published in Italy, I forgot the other (inked by Mario Pedrazzi (Studio Giolitti).

Cheers
Romano

So there seems to be lots more research to do. Thanks Romano.
